18th Century Country House Tipperary

Restoration of 18th country house and outbuildings in Tipperary, 2015 - 2019

Works to this 1790’s protected structure included new roofing, extensive structural work, floor restoration, new lime render and plaster, restoring and replacing windows, plaster and stone restoration, new insulated basement slab, new services including making both houses run only on heat pumps. The approach was - simple and spare to highlight the proportions and quality of light of the house.

How does one heat a house like this with delicate historic single glazed windows, large volumes and solid masonry walls? We have found through several projects that there are several key principles that will begin to address this challenge:

  • A warm roof with good ventilation above.

  • A new warm basement floor dries the walls out and gently heats the whole house.

  • Draughtproof windows combined with adequate room ventilation and restricted flues.

  • Breathable walls, ideally using breathable insulation such as Diathonite or hemp.

  • Smart heating that is adjusted to the occupants’ lifestyle.
